Credit Dave Gibbons How can whales become bells, and sounds become bubbles?
Explore interspecies communication and poetic listening with Yolande Harris, a composer, sound and video artist whose internationally recognised research explores the transformative potential of sound and listening in times of environmental change.
In On Behalf of These / Sound Portal for Bell Bubbles, you are invited to move between the deep ocean and the cathedral tower, discovering unexpected connections between whale song, bells and the natural world. Listen, look and explore how sound can connect species, environments and different ways of knowing.
Created through research into whales, underwater sound and local bell-ringing traditions, the exhibition brings together three Sound Portals for the first time. Experience new works in glass, video, sound, textiles and drawings alongside earlier Sound Portals, combining composition, graphic notation and sound walks.
You will:
- Encounter sounds inspired by whales, bells and underwater environments.
- Discover how artists use listening to explore interspecies communication and environmental change.
- Consider how listening differently can reveal new connections with the natural world.
Exhibition dates: 2 October - 7 November
Location: The Winchester Gallery
