Evolving Languages is a student project designed in collaboration with Houses of Parliament, Parliamentary Archives, Southampton Pride and Face. Language has historically incorporated discriminatory or prejudiced terminology, reflecting the biases and power dynamics of the societies in which they developed. Systematic use of this language perpetuates harmful stereotypes or prejudices and contributes to a culture of conscious or unconscious discrimination and bias. Staff and students created a series of seminars, workshops and tote bag activities to explore how enacting a positive choice in language can challenge these problematic ideas and help enable a more inclusive, equitable and empathetic future-based society.
